Manitoba Underdogs Rescue to use spay/neuter grant to fix
250 dogs in remote First Nations communities in 2019

WINNIPEG, MANTIOBA – FEBRUARY 1, 2019 – MANITOBA UNDERDOGS RESCUE INC. has received a $30,000 grant from PetSmart Charities of Canada to help fuel its spay and neuter efforts across participating Manitoba First Nations communities.  With the help of this donation and

through their Fix It! Manitoba spay/neuter program, the organization will aim to provide subsidized spay/neuter surgeries to 250 dogs while also delivering other veterinary care such as vaccinations, wellness checks and medications to pets in participating communities.

Fixing these dogs will prevent a minimum of 5,250 unplanned puppies from being born in the next 18 months alone—which will be a tremendous help to reducing the already overwhelming stray dog population in parts of Manitoba. This will reduce the number of roaming and stray dogs, including dogs that form packs and can pose a danger children, adults, and other animals in partnering communities.

Manitoba Underdogs Rescue is aiming to host four mobile spay/neuter clinics this year that will serve a collective population of 200 owned dogs. The organization also plans to complete 50 fix-and-return spay/neuter surgeries for community dogs in First Nations neighbourhoods.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be partnering with PetSmart Charities of Canada for the second year in a row,” said Manitoba Underdogs Fix It! Manitoba Program Coordinator, Kayla Simpson.  “This grant couldn’t have come at a better time as we look to build relationships with new communities in the province. We cannot thank PetSmart Charities of Canada enough for this opportunity to fuel our spay/neuter initiatives in First Nations communities throughout Manitoba.”

“Over the past two years, PetSmart Charities of Canada has provided $50,000 to support the spay and neuter efforts of Manitoba Underdogs Rescue,” says Dani LaGiglia, regional relationship manager at the leading funder of animal welfare. “We’re proud to partner with organizations who share our commitment to humanely reducing Canada’s homeless pet population.”
